There were a lot of different steps that were involved in making \u201cEchoes of Imagination: How Digital Audio Brings Stories to Life<\/a>.\u201d Our professor gave us different options on what we wanted to do our project on, which included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  6. Augmented Reality<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    I decided to choose digital audio because I love music and making different kinds of sounds. I was keen to learn more about what digital audio was about. The task that intrigued me was to<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n

    “Compose an audio essay using found sound recorded in a local environment, by using sound clips, or through some combination of clips and recordings.\u201d1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

    I knew automatically that I wanted to find sounds on the internet to use instead of making them up, since I knew how much time it would save me. I started with going to my favorite website named Freesound<\/a> because it is easy to look up particular sounds I was looking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I was able to find nine different sounds that I could use to make an audio essay. They are all from Freesound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      When I found all the sounds I needed to create an outside walking journey, I knew I was going into the time-consuming part: editing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      I started with going to clipchamp<\/a>11<\/a><\/sup> and clicking \u201ccreate a new video.\u201d Clipchamp is mostly known for editing videos, but I use it for creating audio as well because I am familiar with this website since I used it for my Digital Storytelling class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Step 1:<\/strong> I added the audio in this order, one below the other:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Door opening<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. Background<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      3. Wind Chimes<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      4. Bird sounds<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      5. Walking<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      6. Waterfall<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      7. Thunder<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      8. Outside rain<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        Step 2: <\/strong>I moved them to where I wanted them to come into the audio, whether that was at 0 seconds or 14 seconds, and so forth, until I found a good flow within the audio essay. This was the longest part, taking me around 20 minutes of just listening to the audio over and over again until it sounds right. Some of the audio I had to trim and cut out the points; I only needed the wind chimes. Other parts of the audio I had to make repeat, like the walking, because it was too short. I also wanted to make sure I had background audio so that way it did not sound completely silent, since that is not how the real world is. There is always going to be audio around you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Step 3:<\/strong> Making sure the level of volume is correct. For me this was the hard part because no matter how long I spent trying to make all the audio pieces not too loud or quiet for the audio essay, I felt like it was not right. I wish the door opening and shutting at the beginning and end were louder than they came out to be. I played around with it for about 30 minutes, and in my earbuds it was perfect. I should have checked what it sounded like without the earphones because then I would have caught that it was very quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        At the end of all my hard work, the audios were where they needed to be it in order to create \u201cA Stroll Outside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        How does this assignment help my digital identity?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        This assignment of creating digital audio will help my digital identity because it shows the audience my creativity, and it shows that I have hands- on skills. It shows my personal interest in audio and the style of loving the outdoors. By putting this assignment on my website, it will add to my academic portfolio that I am able to take everywhere with me, even when school ends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        How does digital audio connect to class readings?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        As noted by Abby Mullen in her guide How to Listen to a Podcast for Class, audio works differently than text.12<\/a><\/sup> Instead of creating chapters for a book or novel, I created beats that overlap with other beats. I was asking myself: Can the audience follow through the journey of a stroll outside? I did make an audio piece, but I was also listening to what it sounded like to someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        What readings did I use?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        3. \u201c99% Invisible: The Sound of the Artificial <\/a>World\u201d Influence: Helped me layer urban and natural sounds.15<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        4. \u201cBeing Siri<\/a>\u201d Influence: Made me think about the human side of digital sound, where tone, clarity, and pacing affect the emotional connection.16<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        5. \u201cMeet the Man Whose Voice Became Stephen Hawking\u2019s<\/a> Influence: Helped me remember that sounds also have identities and how accessible they can be.17<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n
        6. \u201cThe Sound of Life: What is a Soundscape?<\/a>\u201d Influence: This one was the main one that taught me something about audio. I learned that sound could capture a moment in time, helping me connect emotions to the environment I created.18<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          All of these websites had perfect information that I wanted to add since it was relevant to my digital audio that I was creating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Teaching Materials:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          The format I chose was a website post because I want to be able to go back to my work and be proud of what I did. Nowadays everything is online, and when I make PowerPoints, I tend to forget about them; however, if I put them on a website, I can share them and look back on all my work with a couple of clicks. I made sure that I was able to embed the audio I created so that my audience was able to engage by clicking the play button, which would start the audio. As for the clarity, I do wish that you could hear the door open and close without needing headphones. I know that my information on the topic was well taught because my audience was asking follow-up questions, and they were actively listening by moving closer to my computer to hear. I had to change my teaching strategies from my last module a little bit. I still used my website as a platform, but I had to share the website on my personal computer since my website did not want to pull up on the TV that was provided for us to connect in class. It was a hiccup, but I still think it went well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Future Digital Projects:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          I do believe that this could help with the final project because my teacher keeps hinting at the fact that she is happy that I am putting all my work on a website. Time will only tell if it will truly help or not. As for the audio learning, I do believe that our teacher is building up the class for a big final, which might include an audio assignment or some way that I will have to merge audio to create something. What that something is, I am not sure. I am having fun creating my own posts and websites because it gives me freedom while still doing my assigned work. As of right now, this will be my last digital class because I will be graduating in December, and digital is not my major. Creating a website will always be something I think about while I look back at all the hours spent on it. Creating audio will not be part of my career. I want to be a school counselor when I get my master\u2019s degree, and a lot of that is about communication and understanding others. Even though I may not directly use audio editing tools, this project helped me understand that listening is an important skill that will help me become a better listener in my future career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Strongest Aspect:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          The quote that really stuck out to me was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \u201cDigital audio has shown me how it allows us to express creativity in a new way while still having connections to the world around us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          I said it this way because it shows that digital audio can be creative but still allows us to be aware of real-world connections. Everyday sounds could be turned into stories that reveal emotion and even create a plotline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
